simple tasks, part 1

3-D modeling software portion of email to friend:

I've been wanting to learn how to use a 3_D modeling program.

Discoverd that Maya 6.0 has a Personal Learning Edition one can download for free. You know I was all over that. It's free, though anything you create will have the Maya PLE imprint across it making your creations undesirable to post/use.

Problem: Attempting to install the PLE.

It was giving me the oddest error message at the beginning of the install:

"Install path contains non-ASCII character."

bah. The darned software was going straight from my desktop into my harddrive (I consider this one massive folder) than straight into the Applications folder. Where are the non-ASCII characters?!?!?!

Sheesh. So, I've been hanging out in Maya's company forum, Alias, and at the Apple forums. Apple has been no help at all. Besides the fact they have me listed as just joining. What? I've been sporatically using those forums for several years. Yeah, whatever. I love Apple, but come on.

Finally Thursday, I discovered a solution to installing the software ... though it wasn't a perfect installation. A couple of minor errors, which might not be a problem.

Installing the PLE for Maya 6.0 really begs the question: Do I really need to learn a 3-D software when the full version costs $7,000? So what if the PLE is free. Will learning this software, help me understand how to use a far less expensive 3-D modeling program?

I did it anyway.

Personally I use Blender: a formal commercial package now available as zero-cost, Free Software. There really is no substitute for Maya, but Blender comes closest for the cost of a download and the forums are very helpful.

Ew. That sounds like a good find.

I hope it's mac-friendly.

The name is certainly fun.

Thanks, Chum'.

Hi Chum',

Just checked out blender software.

It's very fun ... and the images they use for samples are very ... um, twisted. everyone looks demonic. i love it.

Again, thank you for the tip.

I like the fact that it's FREE!!!

yea! woo-hoo.

I just downloaded that a couple days ago; I'm really looking forward to playing with it, once I have a free ten thousand hours to figure out how to use it...

Re: ..
yeah, several thousand hours and several thousand dollars.

it must be good if it's that expensive. i guess it's software people making a living off their industrial designs use.

me, i'm just a newbie who wants to create her own world ... new and old in 3-D. of course, my purist husband truly dislikes the idea. he's a pencil and paper man.

how 'bout you? what drew you to the software?

Re: ..
Maya is probably the best 3D imaging software out there. It's one of the things used to make movies like The Lord of the Rings. I've played off and on with a variety of 3d imaging programs but have always wanted to try Maya. So far, though, I haven't had the time to figure out how it works.

Oh, that makes Maya even more inticing to use.

chumducky mentioned blender as a cheap, yet decent 3-D software. It's not maya, but is most likely in my price range.

i do have the excuse that i could use it for work ... better learn the software first for i pitch that idea.

Re: ..
Blender is free. The interface is very confusing, but if you read some tutorials, you should be able to figure it out. There's probably not much that Maya can do which Blender can't.

Re: ..
oh, yes. I just checked out their website.

Blender is free ... is does look more confusing than maya ... but if it can do pretty much what maya can ... then when i have time ... :: hah-hah :: ... i'll check it out.
