We just got a new car

It's been since Valentine's Day since our accident, and we just got a new car.

Being without a car for several weeks was fun and not so fun. It was a good experience to be forced into and I hope to continue to take the bus or walk (or bike) to and fro work on a somewhat regular basis.

We ended up with a 2008 Honda Fit base model and got it for less than the Kelley Blue Book price. The color in the picture is what we have. Not my first choice. It was what was available. The mpgs are decent. A little under the smart car's mpgs. At least the Honda Fit has front-wheel drive and doesn't require Premium gas. Plus, the Fit has wonderful storage space in the back. Loads of space. Is that why Honda calls it the "Fit?"

On a wild note: This car has power steering, a first for Mr. F and me. The car drives just like my mother's first couple of Honda Civics from the mid-to-late 1980s. I felt at home right away. Weird, I know, but it really helps.

Cute! I love the Fits on the road around here. It's one of the cars I considered before deciding on the Prius I bought 2 months ago.

Apparently there is some cult-ish attitude towards Fits. You may see other Fit owners waving at you on the road. (or so I heard on an NPR segment one time. :) I love that sort of hey-you-have-the-same-car-we're-connected! thing.

That's neat about the Fit cult thang. Didn't know about it.

Have been thinking it could be fun to decorate its exterior. Maybe we'll (I'll) wait until it's starting to look lived in.

I bet you're loving your Prius! I would think there's a groupie thing amongst Prius owners, too. We wanted one, but were trying to keep the initial cost down. I wish they were less expensive. Give 'em more time!

Yeah, I wanted to keep the cost down too. But after thinking about how we buy cars, pay them off and then keep them for a long time afterwards, I decided the extra cost of the Prius would work out in the end for us in terms of length of ownership and usefulness.

It's the first new car I've ever bought for myself. (we bought a new jeep but it was for my husband, i don't really drive it) That new smell is intoxicating.

You have a very good point here.

My husband overruled on the Prius decision. We just talked about his argument is that it was too electronic. He didn't want to be tethered to Toyota for repairs.

Blah. I forgot about that point ... was thinking he was completely turned off by the "fluffy" dashboard tech thing.

I wouldn't mind being tethered to Toyota for repairs. But, again, the initial cost did play a role in the overall decision. Not sure if you saw my previous post about my snow-related car accidents. Feeling a bit skittish about driving in slick weather. Who knows how long we'll hold onto a car.

Yay for new cars!! And it's great that you feel comfortable driving it.
I've been trying to walk to work at least a couple days a week, it's only a 20 minute walk, and as long as my heel/ankle isn't bothering me it's really nice!

Oh, you're walking with your ankle/heel still bothering you? Yeowzah. I hope it helps to walk.

One way to work is about 55 minutes ... moderate pace ... plus, I'm short ... travel less distance.

It doesn't help to walk, but it doesn't really hurt it to walk either as long as it's not bad in the first place. It's kind of under control now with meds but I never know when it'll start hurting or what causes the flare ups, so I pretty much use a cane unless I'm just going a couple blocks.

As long as you're not hurting it.
