Awakening to singing ... again

Now that Mr F and I are settling into Albuquerque, I decided it was time to get out the sheet music and start working on my singing so I could eventually perform again. And possibly push further than where I was when I stopped back in 2002.

Eight years since my last official performances. Dang, time goes by fast.

What got the fire burning under my backside was a local six-week vocal jazz class through the New Mexico Jazz Workshop. The more I get to know about this group, the more I'm discovering how influential/active it is in the local music scene. It's a great organization for anyone who appreciates live performance.

It's been a wild ride these past six weeks with the nerves dictating far too much. I went through several songs before I picked one to sing for our performance. Our teacher wanted us to have a song picked out for our second class, but that didn't happen. Thankfully, I wasn't the only one. That doesn't mean she was pleased with those of us who weren't prepared.

Tomorrow night is our last class and our big performance. Yeah, I'm nervous, so I've been practicing as much as possible. There are 16 of us in the class. It will be loads of fun. This group of singers is fun.

Upping the ante, three weeks ago I discovered the Opera/Broadway Open Mic Night, which happens every Friday at a local coffee house with great acoustics. The man that "orchestrates" this event is high energy and a lovely opera singer with a passion for encouraging other singers to challenge themselves each week.

I'm up for the challenge, however, I'm lacking most of my sheet music. This shouldn't be an excuse, but it would be wonderful to have some of it here. The music I have passion to sing. I don't want to spend money on getting sheet music I have packed away in our storage unit in Indiana. Ugh. Sure it's good to learn new music. So I guess that's what's going to happen.

Not to cause drowsiness, but when Mr F and I were going through much of our storage unit, I found my bag of what I believed was filled with tons of sheet music. Grabbed it and threw it in the car. It was disappointing to discover that most of the bundle in it were catalogs for sheet music. Double ugh. Guess I pulled out most of the music and organized it into a shelving unit custom made for sheet music a friend gave me. That shelving unit is hidden deep within our storage unit. Couldn't find it anywhere.

Oh, well.

Onward march.

Rock it, sister!

I am really going to miss living in downtown Portland for the very reason of the main library. Half of the third floor is dedicated to musical scores. It's bleeding AMAZING. I wish you had something like that out there... or hope you find a magical gate to such a place. :)
